CLQ 3231 C13/AH:Imaging Maidens, Matrons & Muses
Aspasia, Cleopatra, and Livia are among the few women from the Ancient World whose images and biographies have survived to the present day; most women from this period remain anonymous. Through visual objects and literary documents, this course explores the lives of such women, both unknown and illustrious. We will examine how images and writings of the Ancient World shaped and were shaped by prevailing notions of gender, how these notions limited the possibilities open to women, and how some women overcame these limitations. Finally, we will study how some of these archetypal images continue to impact perceptions of women and gender today. Co-requisite
