OMED 8431 Newborn Care Elective Clerkship

This four-week at-home elective is designed to integrate the personal experience of parenting or caring for a neonate into a structured educational opportunity emphasizing infant and maternal health through the incorporation of experiential, reflective, and didactic components. The elective will provide the student with exposure to normal patterns of growth, development, behavior, elimination, and sleep as well as nutrition and safety of an infant from the perspective of both a physician and a parent or caregiver. Through the observation of and participation in the routine care of their infant, the student will become adept at addressing typical infant issues and in providing anticipatory guidance for common parenting concerns to expecting or new parents. In addition, the student will develop an awareness of various community and educational resources available for infants and parents.
