CLQ 3220 C12/CS:Rituals: Magic,Science, Religion
Since the founding of the discipline, anthropologists have explored the blurry boundaries between the fields of magic, science, and religion. In this course, students will examine how the beliefs of individuals are formed through ritual performance in each of these fields. Using ethnographic examples from California, students consider the poetic aspects and political implications of ritual practices within diverse social groups, including Native Americans at the turn of the 20th century, Mexican immigrants in San Francisco, African American transgendered youth in Oakland, and scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
