CLQ 3020 HO/CS: Sense of Place
Have you 'found your place in the world?' Is there 'a place for everyone?' Have you ever 'put someone in her place?' Drawing from the social and physical sciences this course explores what we mean by place and specifically what it means to have a 'sense of place.' We step out of the classroom and into the woods to experience and reflect on our relationship to the natural world. And our questions spark our adventure: Where is our place in the natural world? How does our understanding of place help to construct our relationship to other humans and non-humans. Does it shape our concept of wilderness? Our questions move between local and global. How has place helped to construct identity? Does globalization influence our 'sense of place?' We move through sacred and desecrated ground, across native lands to urban environment and mediated landscapes. Co-requisite:
