CLQ 3351 C25/AH: Imaging the Gendered Narrative
Depictions of gender in the visual arts include some of the oldest images from human history, preserving stories by humans and for humans about what it means to be male/female. In this course, we explore how definitions of gender have been articulated visually through the ages, first by differing skin color and male/female attributes and then by more complex means of hair adornment, costume, and occupation. Our study begins with Paleolithic cave painting and sculpture and continues with Egyptian tomb painting, then Roman hair design and Renaissance self portraiture, ending with eighteenth century costume and contemporary body art.
