FYS 1115 CONFUCIAN ANALECTS: HERE TODAY
Introduction to the Analects, its translation, text history, and contents, as well as a survey of other sources on Confucius, including Sima Qian’s (145-ca. 86 BC) “Kongzi shijia” in the Shiji and the Kongzi jiayu by Wang Su. We’ll study the texts through published translations, and try to explore the classics in different directions such as the geographical information, the disciples and followers, and the spreading and excavated material. The objectives will be (1) to understand these texts in their historical context(s) within its textual existence and materiality and (2) to apply whatever students find relevant to life today.
