Doctor of Education in Education Leadership

On June 22, 2010, the Board of Regents of the State of New York approved an amendment to our master plan authorizing Manhattanville College’s first program at the doctoral level, an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership. This signature pathway to the doctoral degree serves the needs of mid-career professionals who have leadership experience in public or private schools, colleges and universities, community programs, governmental agencies, or NGOs with major education initiatives.

Signature Pathway

Accepted students will have early career leadership experience and the initial licensure/certification/program requirements for their chosen career path as leaders in education. Students complete a three-year program of study that tightly integrates coursework, field experiences, and applied research (59 semester hours of post-master’s credit including dissertation).  The focus is on preparing leaders to work in changing suburbs and small cities, and the signature pedagogy is problem-based learning.  Doctoral program experiences are organized around five themes:  leading learning organizations, becoming a sophisticated practitioner-scholar, developing self and others, participating in professional and policy-making communities, and facilitating responsive education programs.

Executive Ed.D Pathway for “ABD’s”

The Executive Ed.D. degree pathway is designed specifically for those who were enrolled in a doctoral program and completed all requirements but the dissertation (known as "ABD".)  The Executive Ed.D. offers advanced doctoral students the opportunity to complete their degree by enrolling in twenty (20) credits over two academic years with a customized and individualized course of study, focusing on current problems of practice, the dissertation process, and research in educational leadership.  This dissertation completion pathway consists of a blend of course formats (for example, in-person on-campus for summer sessions and on-line synchronous courses) in preparing for and completing the doctoral dissertation.

For further information on doctoral programs, please consult the program director, the doctoral program website, and the doctoral student handbook.

Higher Education Leadership Pathway

The Higher Education Leadership pathway to the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership is for students who wish to enter or are already working in faculty, service, or administrative roles in colleges and universities, state education agencies, and postsecondary-related nonprofits. Students complete 18 credits specializing in Higher Education Leadership as part of the 59-credit program required for the doctoral degree. Students who complete this pathway will understand the landscape of higher education (e.g., political, economic, historical, social, and organizational) and have the theoretical and research foundation needed to participate more fully in communities of practice as engaged practitioner-scholars in higher education and other related environments.  One cohort of students is admitted to this pathway each Fall.
