EDUC 3385 Culturally Responsive Teaching
Culturally Responsive Teaching explores the instructional practices and teacher stances that respond to the social and cultural contexts in which children learn and develop. This professional development course examines the principles and approaches to culturally responsive teaching, culturally sustaining pedagogy, and stances that are currently being developed in support of learning communities for culturally, linguistically, and economically diverse student populations. The course also examines how biases, both personal and structural, influence instructional practices, curriculum, and policies in public education. Additionally, the course critically probes the political, economic, and educational infrastructures that influence students’ access to equitable educational experiences. Teacher candidates will develop reflective practices as a means of continually developing cultural responsiveness.
