Program Description:

Visual and Performing Arts can inspire, inform, entertain, or move us to experience a wide range of emotions. Using words, images or the unspoken language of dance and music, visual and performing artists can create a bridge of imagination that brings people together. Studying visual and performing arts helps develop creative and communication skills, while fostering the essential value and importance of collaboration. Students choose a concentration in either Theater, Music, Cinema and Film Studies, or General Studies, and can explore a range of styles and genres within these fields, including acting, directing, songwriting, dance, musical theater, theatrical stage combat, and more.

Students in the Visual and Performing Arts program have transferred to prestigious institutions and also gone on to successful professional work in the theater, film, and music industries, including starring roles in soap operas such as Guiding Light, and The Bold and the Beautiful; prime time shows including Law & Order, Blue Bloods, OZ, CSI: Miami and Criminal Minds, as well as appearances in feature films, including Magic Mike, The Avengers, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and others. Students have also launched successful recording and touring careers in music, and professional work in NYC on Broadway and Off-Broadway shows.

Theatrical Stage Combat courses are taught by a Society of American Fight Directors Certified Teacher, and students can earn SAFD certificates in eight disciplines, as well as SAFD Actor Combatant and Advanced Actor Combatant certificates upon successful completion of Skills Proficiency Tests, which are adjudicated by an SAFD Fight Master at the conclusion of each semester, along with an SAFD Master class.

The Visual and Performing Arts department also works together with the Cultural Arts Theater, where students perform and work on main-stage productions throughout the year. There is also an opportunity to Intern and work alongside professionals.
