Italian Studies Major

The major in Italian Studies consists of a minimum of nine courses in Italian language, literature, and culture. Students with no prior knowledge of Italian progress from elementary and intermediate Italian to content courses at the 300 and 400 level. Required courses are distributed as follows:

  • ITL 201 and 202;
  • one 200-level upper intermediate course in Italian;
  • four literature and culture courses at the 300 level or higher, at least two of which must be taught in Italian;
  • two additional elective courses.
     

Elective courses may be at any level and may be taken at the College or through a Study Away program. Students are required to take at least two upper-level courses in each of the two periods: Medieval/Early Modern and Modern/Contemporary. Students who test beyond the intermediate level are expected to take a minimum of nine courses at the 220 level and higher. Individual Studies and Honors Studies within the Department may be used to fulfill major requirements.

Four Italian Studies courses at the 300 level or higher:

Students are required to take at least two upper-level courses in each of the two periods, Medieval/Early Modern and Modern/Contemporary Italian, two of which must be taught in Italian. Students are expected to enroll in FLAC if offered.

Students majoring in Italian Studies are encouraged to spend one semester in Italy on a Study Away program. The program must be chosen in consultation with their major adviser.
