Learning Goals in the Italian Studies Major

By the end of the course of study, students will be able to demonstrate the following competencies:

Language Competency:
● Students will demonstrate the ability to express themselves orally in a competent manner and understand others in both everyday and professional settings.
● Students will demonstrate the ability to produce different types of academic and professional texts with linguistic accuracy in a well organized and cohesive manner. 
● Students will demonstrate the ability to recognize and comprehend texts from different genres.

Cultural and Transcultural Competency:
● Students will demonstrate basic knowledge of pre-modern, modern, and contemporary Italian and Italophone cultures, with particular attention to literature, cinema, visual arts, history, geography, politics, emigration and immigration, (de)colonialism, gender issues, food culture, medical humanities, economy and the labor market.
● Students will demonstrate the ability to make connections beyond disciplinary and cultural boundaries.  

Analytical and Critical Competency:
● Students will demonstrate the ability to analyze a variety of sources such as literary texts, films, and images after being exposed to different theoretical approaches.
● Students will demonstrate the ability to gather, organize, and present information from primary and secondary sources.
● Students will demonstrate the ability to produce carefully researched, well written and well argued essays in Italian and English.
