RELI 30693 Native Americans, Religion, and Contemporary Issues

Prerequisites: Successful completion of either RELI 10023, 10033, or 10043, or consent of instructor. This course explores Native American perspectives on religion (spirituality) and contemporary issues, and compares them with Western-Christian perspectives. Students will read, discuss, and evaluate ideas put forth by important Native American authors, compare traditional Native American ways of knowing (epistemology) with Western-Christian ways, identify and critique stereotypes related to Native American perspectives, and apply these ideas to contemporary issues. Topics will vary by semester. Additionally, students will be in dialog with Native American community leaders on these topics.
