NB 177: Applied Pharmacology for Nursing Practice (2)

This course focuses on pharmacologic principles for nursing practice, administration of medications, and evaluation of the client response. The nursing process format is integrated throughout the course and serves as the framework for the study of drug classifications.

Prerequisite: Admission to Presentation College

NB 215: Introduction to Professional Nursing (2.5)

This beginning course introduces the student to the discipline and profession of nursing, the division of nursing’s philosophy and conceptual framework, program outcomes, the nursing process and the BSN roles. The caring philosophy, historical, spiritual and cultural considerations, nursing theories, professionalism, leadership and legal/ethical aspects of safe nursing practice are introduced. A variety of teaching strategies are used to introduce the student to the primary domains of the program: ENVIRONMENT, HUMANITY, HEALTH and NURSING, as well as the secondary themes identified as essential to the role and function of the professional nurse: health care, safety, quality improvement, social justice, diversity, caring, nursing process, BSN roles and nursing informatics.

Prerequisite: Admission to 200-level nursing, EN 113, MA 114, and PS 133. Corequisite: NL 215.

NL 215: Introduction to Professional Nursing Lab (0.5)

This beginning lab/clinical course explores the discipline of the nursing profession. Further exploration of the BSN program outcomes, the nursing process and the BSN roles can be expected. Professional nursing concepts will be explored within the clinical environment. An introduction and assessment of select nursing skills, knowledge, communication techniques, and attitudes of the professional nurse are demonstrated as proficient. Clinical/lab 22.5 hours.

Prerequisite: Admission to 200-level nursing, EN 113, MA 114, and PS 133. Corequisite: NB 215.

NB 231: Fundamentals of Nursing: Care of the Older Adult (3)

This course provides opportunities to develop competencies necessary to meet the basic needs of individuals throughout the lifespan with a special focus on care of the older adult, in a safe, legal, and ethical manner using the nursing process. Students further develop the learned concepts and theories basic to the art and science of nursing. Students expand on the concepts of client needs, safety, communication, teaching/learning, critical thinking, ethical-legal, cultural diversity, nursing history, and the program's primary/secondary themes as well as its philosophy of nursing. Additionally, this course introduces the fundamental concepts of promoting, maintaining, and regaining health of individuals across the lifespan.

Corequisite: NL 231.

NL 231: Fundamentals of Nursing: Care of the Older Adult Clinical-Lab (2)

This course provides the student with opportunity to incorporate the theoretical and practical basis for fundamental nursing skills. Fundamental nursing skills including psychomotor nursing skills needed to assist individuals in meeting basic human needs are experienced. Skills necessary for maintaining microbial, physical, and psychological safety are introduced along with skills needed in therapeutic interventions. At the conclusion of this course students demonstrate competency in performing basic nursing skills for individuals with common health alterations. The nursing process is used to identify and address the bio-psycho-social, developmental, cultural, and spiritual needs of individuals during the clinical component. Clinical lab 90 hours.

NL 237: Physical Assessment Clinical (1)

This course is an introduction to a basic focused physical appraisal of an individual’s status and situation at hand. Students will learn to gather information about a patient's physiological/biological, psychological, sociological, and spiritual status. At the conclusion of this course students will demonstrate competency in performing basic physical assessment.

NB 247: Medical/Surgical Nursing Concepts Across the Lifespan (3)

Complex, well-defined, and recurring alterations in health ranging from adaptive to maladaptive, experienced by individual and groups of adult clients are the focus of this course. The nursing process is used to determine and address the bio-psycho-social, developmental, cultural, and spiritual needs of the client. Nursing case studies are used to illustrate the impact of the ENVIRONMENT, HUMANITY, and HEALTH, upon the NURSING care of clients. Ethical and legal aspects of safe nursing practice are explored.

NB 257: Practical Nursing Maternal-Child Nursing (1)

The course introduces students to perspectives in maternal and child health nursing throughout the childbearing process of pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum. The course will introduce student to the newborn through adolescence, with a focus on child health and childhood diseases, with special needs incorporated into the course.

NL 257: Practical Nursing Maternal-Child Nursing (1)

The clinical course introduces students to perspectives in maternal and child health nursing throughout the childbearing process of pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum. The course will introduce student to the newborn through adolescence, with a focus on child health and childhood diseases, with special needs incorporated into the course. The clinical experiences provide students with an introduction to both maternal health and child health.

Prerequisite: NL 247 and NB 247,  Corequisite: NB 257

NB 271: Practical Nursing Capstone (2)

This course provides the student with opportunity to discuss Licensed Practical Nursing professional issues. This course covers the history of the profession, legal, and ethical issues, communication in the workplace, LPN Scope of Practice, trends in nursing, and leadership/manager roles of the Licensed Practical Nurse in healthcare settings.

NL 271: Practical Nursing Capstone Clinical (4)

This clinical course provides the student with opportunity to experience the leadership/manager roles of the Licensed Practical Nurse in healthcare settings.

Prerequisite: NL  247, and NB 247,  Corequisite: NB 271

NB 272: Practical Nursing Seminar/NCLEX Preparation (1)

This course provides the student an opportunity to assimilate their learning. In addition, students will review program material in preparation for the board examination required to practice as a License Practical Nursing.

Prerequisite: NL 247 and NB 247.

NB 301: Death and Dying (1)

This course provides an introduction to the study of death, dying, and grief by presenting the salient points of major issues and questions through diverse points of view.

NB 313: Health Assessment (2)

This course is an introduction to holistic physical assessment of individuals across the lifespan. It builds on the scientific knowledge acquired from the natural sciences. The functional patterns will be the framework for documenting the health history and physical assessment of systems. Inherent in this course is the integration of ENVIRONMENT and HEALTH within the assessment of HUMANITY. Assessment is the foundation upon which NURSING practices. Data analysis and critical thinking are an integral part of this course. Discussion of lab/diagnostic testing is integrated.

Prerequisite: Admission to 200-level nursing, EN 113, MA 114, PS 133. Corequisite: NL 313.

NL 313: Health Assessment Lab (1)

This course is an introduction to the holistic physical assessment of individuals in the lab setting. Further discussion will take place through hands-on demonstration of the functional patterns for documenting the health history and completing the physical assessment of systems. Application of various lab/diagnostic testing is integrated through various client scenarios. Lab hours 45.

NB 331: Maternal-Child Nursing (4)

This course focuses on concepts pertaining to the health needs of women, children, and child-bearing families in multiple health care settings. These concepts are presented in the context of ENVIRONMENT, HUMANITY, HEALTH, and NURSING. Promotion and maintenance of health for individuals of childbearing and childbearing families are primary focus. Principles of mental health, growth and development along with select theorist allow for understanding of the individual and family. Nursing care of at-risk families and children with special needs is introduced.

Prerequisite: All 200-level nursing courses, NB 313, NL 313, NB 334, NB 353. Corequisite: NL 331 or NL 332 (LPN).

NL 331: Maternal Child Nursing Clinical (3)

This clinical course allows individuals to apply the nursing process caring for members of the childbearing family in multiple settings. Assisting the childbearing family with labor, delivery, post-partum and newborn care both in the simulation lab and the acute setting. Assessments will be performed on patients through the childbearing process, newborns and the pediatric population. Evaluations of children's developmental/physical progress and development of a teaching plan for an individualized child is experienced. Clinical hours 145.

Prerequisite: All 200-level nursing courses, NB 313, NL 313, NB 334, NB 353. Corequisite: NB 331.

NL 331L: Maternal Child Nursing Clinical (LPN) (1)

This clinical course allows individuals to apply the nursing process caring for members of the childbearing family in multiple settings. NB 334: Pharmacology/Pathophysiology I (4)

This course is part one of a comprehensive study that focuses on the relationship between human pathophysiology and pharmacology and the impact on the client's ENVIRONMENT, HUMANITY, HEALTH, and NURSING. The course analyzes and applies pathophysiologic and pharmacologic processes to the care and promotion of wellness across the lifespan while utilizing scientific rationale for nursing practice. The student will use knowledge of anatomy/physiology, chemistry, and microbiology as a basis for exploring and expanding how alterations in structure and function disrupt human body adaptation (maladaptation). This course comprehensively integrates laboratory and diagnostic testing. Major drug classes and prototypical drugs are presented with specific application to nursing care within the nursing process.

Prerequisite: 'C' or above in BI 213, BL 211, BI 263, BL 263, BI 293, BL 291, CH 133, and CL 131. Corequisite: NB 213 or NU 313, and NB 333 or NU 333.

NB 345: Mental Health Nursing (2.5)

This course examines the development and changing focus of mental health nursing throughout the lifespan. The course is focused on the concepts basic to providing mental health care and meeting the mental health needs of clients along the HEALTH continuum. NURSING theory, psychobiology, psychopharmacology, the causations of mental illness, various mental illnesses, and the HUMANITY of the mind/body/spirit connection will be emphasized. The impact of the ENVIRONMENT on the health and well-being of individuals with psychiatric disorders will be addressed through the nursing process.

Prerequisite: All 200-level nursing courses, NB 313, NL 313, NB 334, NB 353. Corequisite: NL 345.

NL 345: Mental Health Nursing Clinical (1.5)

This clinical course provides the student with opportunity to incorporate the theoretical and practical basis for mental health nursing. Students are challenged to examine their roles as baccalaureate-level nurses in providing health care services to persons affected by mental illness. Students will synthesize the evidence-based practice into providing quality mental health care to diverse populations. The clinical experiences provide students the opportunity to observe and utilize the nursing process as applied in various mental health settings. Clinical hours 68.

This medical-surgical course expands the fundamental principles of nursing and focuses on concepts relating to care of the adult in the acute care setting with commonly occurring medical-surgical problems. A priority of this course is on the use of the nursing process and developing competence in providing holistic care for clients with specific health care needs/problems. The themes of ENVIRONMENT, HUMANITY, HEALTH, and NURSING are incorporated into holistic care of clients with acute and chronic alterations in health during the clinical experience. The focus of the clinical experience is caring and critical thinking in the application of the nursing process with ill adults in health care facilities. Classroom: 4 hours; Clinical: 180 hours/semester.

Prerequisite: All 200-level nursing courses, NB 313, NL 313, NB 334, NB 353. Corequisite: NL 364 or NL 364L (LPN).

NL 364: Adult Health Nursing I Clinical (4)

This medical-surgical clinical course applies the concepts relating to care of the adult in the acute care setting with commonly occurring medical-surgical problems. A priority of this course is on the use of the nursing process and developing competence in providing holistic care for clients with specific health care needs/problems. The themes of ENVIRONMENT, HUMANITY, HEALTH, and NURSING are incorporated into holistic care of clients with acute and chronic alterations in health during the clinical experience. Focus of the clinical experience is caring and critical thinking in the application of the nursing process with ill adults in health care facilities. Clinical hours 180.

NL 364L: Adult Health Nursing I Clinical (LPN) (1)

NB 383: Therapeutic Nutrition (3)

This course will provide the student with an overview of nutritional therapy for diabetes, cardiac, renal, cancer, and gastrointestinal disorders. Practical applications and treatment of nutrition-related pathologies will be emphasized. Basic knowledge will be introduced to enable students to begin to evaluate nutritional issues and apply therapeutic nutrition principles to client care through the nursing process. Classroom: 3 hours.

Prerequisite: Prerequisite: 200-level nursing courses and 200-level science requirements or approval of instructor.

NB 421: Variable Topics in Nursing (1)

These elective courses are designed to acquaint the nursing student with current practices in health care. Classroom: 1-2 hours.

This course will focus on application of theoretical and practical nursing skills in a hospital setting. The nursing process is utilized to identify and address the bio-psycho-social developmental, cultural, and spiritual needs of individuals and families. NB 452: Internship (2)

NB 453: Internship (3)

NB 462: Community Health Nursing (2)

Concepts basic to meeting the health needs of HUMANITY, particularly individuals, families, groups, and communities of diverse cultural and social backgrounds in community and rural settings are presented. The impact of the ENVIRONMENT upon the community as the client, and the interrelationship of the HEALTH status of the individual and of the community is explored. Health promotion and disease/illness prevention, along with the principles of epidemiology are addressed. A variety of teaching strategies are used to synthesize the baccalaureate nursing roles and evidence-based practice to provide quality care for individuals, families, groups, and communities. Students will complete a service-learning project in which they reflect on their service to the community in light of servant leadership.

Nursing students may only take two of three 400-level clinical component nursing courses within one semester.

NL 462: Community Health Nursing Clinical-Lab (2)

Concepts basic to meeting the health needs of HUMANITY, particularly individuals, families, groups, and communities of diverse cultural and social backgrounds in community and rural settings are explored. The impact of the ENVIRONMENT upon the community as the client, and the interrelationship of the HEALTH status of the individual and of the community is experienced. Health promotion and disease/illness prevention, along with the principles of epidemiology are addressed. Clinical/lab experiences provide opportunities for students to apply the nursing process and the concepts of community health nursing for individuals, families, groups, and communities. Clinical 90 hours.

Nursing students may only take two of three 400-level clinical component nursing courses within one semester.

Prerequisite: All 300-level nursing courses and requirements for these courses. Corequisite: NB 462.

NB 463: Independent Study (1-3)

This course offers individual study that addresses special needs and interests. Selected readings, observations, conferences, and projects could be selected. The course can be used by the transfer student who needs extra credits in nursing as a way to make up the deficiency or to earn credit for prior learning. It can be used by the student who wants to explore in depth a topic of special interest including clinical internships. The student and the faculty advisor develop course objectives together, depending upon the student's needs. The course offers the option of 1-3 credits. The number of projects/credits to be attempted will be determined at the time of enrollment.

Prerequisite: Admission to the program.

NB 467: Adult Health Nursing II (2.5)

This course explores the role of the BSN nurse in providing competent care of clients with complex, multi-system alterations in health, both physiological and psychosocial. The NURSING process is the basis for delivery of holistic care to individuals, families, groups, and communities (HUMANITY) in a variety of HEALTH care systems and organizations (ENVIRONMENT). This course provides opportunities for the student to explore the concepts of critical care nursing for the individual with complex needs while incorporating the professional behaviors, knowledge, and critical thinking of the baccalaureate nurse student.

Nursing students may only take two of three 400-level clinical component nursing courses within one semester.

Prerequisite: All 200- and 300-level nursing courses. Corequisite: NL 467.

NL 467: Adult Health Nursing II Clinical (2.5)

This course expands upon the role of the nurse in providing competent care of clients with complex, multi-system alterations in health, both physiological and psychosocial. The NURSING process is the basis for delivery of holistic care to individuals, families, groups, and communities (HUMANITY) in a variety of HEALTH care systems and organizations (ENVIRONMENT). This clinical experience provides opportunities for the student to examine complex care concepts, incorporating the professional behaviors, knowledge, and critical thinking of the baccalaureate nurse student. Clinical hours 113.

Nursing students may only take two of three 400-level clinical component nursing courses within one semester.

Prerequisite: NB 467.

NB 471: Leadership Roles in Nursing (2)

This course examines the leadership character and management roles of the baccalaureate nurse. The NURSING process is the basis for discussion of holistic care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations (HUMANITY) in a variety of HEALTH care systems and organizations (ENVIRONMENTS). The leadership role of nursing includes discussion of organizational and systems leadership for client safety and quality care, the management of staff and care for groups of clients, and healthcare policy, finance, and regulatory environments. Critical analysis of the nursing literature is incorporated to support nursing practice and to examine the legal, ethical, moral, and technological aspects of professional nursing.

Nursing students may only take two of three 400-level clinical component nursing courses within one semester.

Prerequisite: NB 462, NL 462, NB 467, NL 467, NB 473 (or concurrent). Corequisite: NL 471 or NL 471R (RNs only).

NL 471: Leadership Roles in Nursing Clinical (3)

Theory and clinical experiences provide opportunities for students to examine the aspects of leadership and management, incorporating the knowledge, attitudes, and critical thinking of the professional nurse. This clinical experience will be with assigned preceptors and focus on leadership and management of client care. Students will explore the transition from student to novice BSN nurse during the preceptored experience.

Nursing students may only take two of three 400-level clinical component nursing courses within one semester.

Prerequisite: NB 462, NL 462, NB 467, NL 467, NB 473 (or concurrent). Corequisite: NB 471.

NL 471R: Leadership Roles in Nursing Clinical (RN) (1)

Theory and clinical experiences provide opportunities for students to examine the aspects of leadership and management, incorporating the knowledge, attitudes, and critical thinking of the professional nurse. This clinical experience will be with assigned preceptors and focus on leadership and management of client care. Students will explore the transition from student to novice BSN nurse during the preceptored experience.

Nursing students may only take two of three 400-level clinical component nursing courses within one semester.

Prerequisite: NB 462, NL 462, NB 467, NL 467, NB 473 (or concurrent). Corequisite: NB 471.

NB 472: Nursing Seminar (2)

This course provides opportunity for students to synthesize, integrate, and apply concepts of professional nursing that were previously learned through baccalaureate didactic and clinical education. The student will synthesize, integrate, and apply program learning into a final synthesis paper. Students will use reflection exercises to set goals and evaluate their progress toward their degree. An intentional focus will be on concepts necessary to pass the NCLEX-RN exam. This must be the last nursing course in the BSN program.

Prerequisite: NB 455, NB 464. Corequisite: NB 473, NB 475.

NB 473: Research in Nursing (3)

Concepts related to the understanding of nursing research are presented. Integration of best evidence with clinical expertise is evaluated to understand the impact of nursing research in clinical practice. Discrimination of valid and non-valid research is discussed and challenged as a base to utilize best evidence in practice. Ethical standards and ethics in research are presented to support regulatory requirements, confidentiality in research collection, analysis, and dissemination, and patient privacy. A variety of teaching strategies are used to synthesize the baccalaureate nursing roles and evidence-based practice to promote quality clinical practice and application of current nursing research trends to nursing practice. Classroom: 3 hours. (Writing Intensive)
