HCA 101: Introduction to Healthcare Administration (3)
In this course, students will learn key principles, practices, and personalities of health care administration. The content is broadly applicable to healthcare enterprises of every kind: public health organizations, physician practices and clinics, hospitals and health systems, agencies and service organizations. The information studied will focus on the scope of responsibilities in managing a health care facility in business, hospitality, technical, and overall healthcare knowledge.

HCA 133: Principles of Healthcare (3)
This course provides an overview of medical topics including typical situations in a medical facility, safety issues, communications issues, and interacting with diverse and difficult patients. It provides emphasis on disease process, physical examination, laboratory procedures, diagnostic equipment, nutrition, medications, specialty practices, physical therapy, and responding to medical emergencies. This foundational information provides students with the knowledge for the application process in administrative decisions.
Prerequisite: BI 162 (or concurrent).
HCA 201: Healthcare Ethics (3)
This course will present an overview of legal and ethical issues facing managers and providers in healthcare. It provides students with a foundation of health law and ethics and reviews a wide variety of health care legal and ethical situations and dilemmas. The goals are to provide students with practical knowledge of health law and ethics and their application to the real world of health care. By the end of the course, students will have been exposed to many management ideas, theories, and applications of health care law and ethical situations. Students will have a working knowledge of medical law and ethical procedures and how to apply them in the health care arena.
Prerequisite: BI 162 (or concurrent).
HCA 211: Healthcare Information Systems (3)
This course will provide an overview to Health Information Management concepts. Topics include identifying types of patient and healthcare records, documentation, the usage and interpretation of electronic medical records, legal aspects of healthcare information management, identifying healthcare record standards, and healthcare confidentiality pertaining to privacy laws and guidelines. Upon completion, students will demonstrate an understanding of health information management within healthcare organizations, and identify trends in the healthcare industry.

HCA 221: Healthcare Delivery Systems (3)
In this course, students are introduced to an overview of the U.S. healthcare system. The historical background of the shift from an acute care hospital-based system to a chronic/preventive care ambulatory focus and influence of current trends such as the Affordable Care Act and the aging population are addressed. Students will examine differences between non-profit and for-profit healthcare organizations, and how quality, safety, and competition within the healthcare industry impact patient care. Assignments and discussions provide opportunities to compare and contrast the U.S. healthcare system to other nations’ healthcare systems.
HCA 231: Healthcare Reimbursement (3)
This course explores the major issues facing the healthcare industry and the effect that public policy, reimbursement methods, and the business environment has on a healthcare organization. Clinical coding and compliance will be discussed along with the coding issues that affect compliance, with an emphasis on ethics in coding. Reimbursement systems, managed care, insurance, Medicare, ICD-10 coding, procedural and diagnostic coding, third-party payers, and governmental regulations are topics analyzed in this course. The Healthcare revenue cycle process facilitates and manages administrative and clinical functions that are associated with maximizing reimbursement. Students learn to use informational and research tools to make effective management decisions.
HCA 301: Human Resources in Healthcare Administration (3)
In this course, students will learn the management of human resources in a health care setting. Principles and methods of personnel work such as employee recruitment, selection, retention, training, evaluation, wage and salary administration, and labor management relations. Students who have completed the course should be able to gain a grasp of Human Resource Administration functions, become familiar with techniques and tools, and be aware of recent developments that impact the workforce in a healthcare setting.
HCA 313: Healthcare Economics (3)
This course will prepare students to understand the economic principles and tools the healthcare administrators need to make effective decisions. Students will study several economic models in detail, including models of health, demand for healthcare and demand for insurance. The emphasis will be on key economic concepts that health economists use to analyze health and healthcare markets. Additionally, students will evaluate and interpret empirical findings in health economics.
HCA 345: Healthcare Accounting and Finance (3)
Health care is one of the largest industries in the world, and involves some of the most complex accounting and finance transactions. This course discusses the management of finances in an organization to maximize the organization’s wealth and the achievement of overall financial goals. The understanding of financial and managerial accounting is explained in relation to finance provisions for analyses in an organization’s resources of profitability and viability. Topics include reading and analyzing healthcare financial statements, recording transactions, budgeting, incremental and full costing, and responsibility accounting.
HCA 383: Healthcare Marketing (3)
This course covers an historical perspective of health care marketing. It examines the motivations of health care consumers and the techniques used in marketing health care products and services. The course also covers the development of a marketing plan for a health care facility.
HCA 401: Legal Aspects of Healthcare Administration (3)
This course examines the role of health care policy and legal, regulatory, and quality control in ethical decision making in healthcare. Students explore concepts and principles of health care policy, legal control, ethical conduct, and regulatory environments and their application to the health care environment. The impact of health care policy and multicultural, socioeconomic, political, legal, and regulatory factors on health care systems is outlined.

HCA 433: Healthcare Administration (3)
This advanced course emphasizes the overall administration of health care providers, including structure and operations. Course coverage will include the following topics: human resources, financial resources, legal and regulatory requirements and coordination of administrative activities to provide high quality health care.
HCA 434: Healthcare Administration Internship (3)
The Healthcare Administration Internship is the capping experience for the Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration. The internship provides students with the opportunity to integrate and synthesize the knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired throughout their course work in a healthcare selected environment. This experience allows students to achieve stated program outcomes of their degree in Healthcare Administration.

HCA 443: Quality Management in Healthcare Administration (3)
This course is designed to prepare the students to understand management operations and explore how healthcare organizations can improve healthcare processes, delivery, and outcomes. Students will examine elements of quality improvement and organizational responsibilities related to quality improvement in healthcare delivery, data analysis for quality improvement, and future of healthcare quality improvement strategies.
