MA - Mathematics
MA 153: College Algebra (3)
This course prepares the student to use higher-level algebra skills in his/her professional and personal life. The course addresses and extends learning in the following topics: linear, quadratic, inverse, polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions; systems of equations and matrices; conic sections; sequences; and mathematical induction. Graphical, symbolic, and numeric techniques are used. (General Education: Foundational Series: Science and Quantitative Reasoning.)
Prerequisite: Appropriate score on math placement test or appropriate ACT/SAT math subscore.
MA 153A - Algebra Co-Requisite (2)
This course is a required MA 153: College Algebra co-requisite for students needing additional support (based on ACT, SAT, or placement test scores) to ensure success in College Algebra. Students will learn basic concepts and skills concurrently with more advanced College Algebra topics. Content will include number sense, expressions, equations, inequalities, functions, graphs, exponents, polynomials, number patterns, and measurement. A student taking this course and passing MA 153: College Algebra can enroll in MA 243: Statistics without taking the statistics co-requisite course. A student failing this course but passing MA 153: College Algebra will not be required to repeat this course.
Prerequisite: Appropriate math placement score.
MA 193: Calculus I (3)
This course deals with limits of functions and approximation, differentiation of elementary functions, maximum and minimum applications.
Prerequisite: 'C' or above in MA 153 or instructor permission.
MA 243: Statistics (3)
This is an introductory course in descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The course includes experimental design, measures of central tendency, variation, correlation, regression, probability, binomial probability distribution, standard normal distribution, estimation, and hypothesis testing. It is intended to prepare students to read and understand research which reports and interprets findings using statistical methods and to prepare students who will attend graduate school for advanced study of statistics. (General Education: Foundational Series: Science and Quantitative Reasoning.)
Prerequisite: Appropriate score on math placement test or appropriateACT/SATmathsubscore.
MA 243A - Statistics Co-Requisite (2)
This course is a required MA 243: Statistics co-requisite for students needing additional support (based on ACT, SAT, or placement test scores) to ensure success in Statistics. Students will learn basic concepts and skills concurrently with more advanced Statistics topics. Content will include number sense, measurement, measures of central tendency, probability, equations, formulas, graphs, and translating English expressions to mathematical inequalities. A student taking this course and passing MA 243: Statistics can enroll in MA 153: College Algebra without taking the college algebra co-requisite course. A student failing this course but passing MA 243: Statistics will not be required to repeat this course.
Prerequisite: Appropriate math placement score.
