Course Placement Policy

As a public institution of higher learning, Laredo College is bound by the Texas Success Initiative Program, which mandates any student seeking a two-year degree and/or certificate of 43 SCHs or more will be required to challenge the Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA) prior to enrolling in any course. That upon completion of the TSIA, a student’s course placement and eligibility will be determined as follows: 
  • A student who meets or exceeds minimum passing standards for the TSIA in Reading, Writing, and Math will be eligible to enroll in college-level courses relevant to his/her program of study¹.
  • A student who does not meet minimum passing standards for the TSIA in Reading, Writing, and Math will be eligible to enroll in developmental coursework in all content areas and required to complete such course sequences prior to enrolling in college-level courses2 pertinent to his/her program of study¹.
  • A student who meets or exceeds minimum passing standards for Math only will be eligible to enroll in college-level Math courses¹ as indicated in his/her program of study while completing developmental coursework in Reading and Writing.
  • A student who meets or exceeds minimum passing standards for Reading and Writing only will be eligible to enroll in college-level courses that warrant college-readiness in these content areas as indicated in his/her program of study¹ while completing developmental coursework in Math.
  • A student who meets or exceeds minimum passing standards for Reading but not Writing or vice versa will be eligible to enroll and complete developmental course sequence in content area where standard was not met prior to enrolling in any college-level course that warrants college-readiness in both areas.
  • A student who earned credit (grade of C or better) for ENGL 1301 (Composition I) will be eligible to enroll in any college-level course that requires college-readiness in Reading and Writing¹. Therefore, credit for courses in History, Government, Speech, Social/Behavioral Science, Life and Physical Science, Creative Arts, etc. will not categorize any student as college-ready in Reading and/or Writing.
  • A student who earned credit (grade of C or better) for MATH 1314 (College Algebra) or higher will be eligible to enroll in any college-level Math course¹.
  • A TSI-waived dual credit or early enrolled student who earns credit (grade of C or better) in ENGL 1301 prior to high school graduation will be recognized as college ready in Reading and Writing.  If a TSI-waived dual credit or early enrolled student does not earn credit for ENGL 1301 prior to high school graduation, student will be required to challenge the TSIA in Reading and Writing.  Credit for courses in History, Government, Speech, Social/Behavioral Science, Life and Physical Science, Creative Arts, etc. will not categorize student as college-ready in Reading and/or Writing. 
  • A TSI-waived dual credit or early enrolled student who earns credit (grade of C or better) in a college-level Math prior to high school graduation will be recognized as college ready in the appropriate Math pathway.  If a TSI-waived dual credit or early enrolled student does not earn credit for college-level Math prior to high school graduation, student will be required to challenge the TSIA in Math.  Credit for MATH 1314 or higher leads to Algebra intensive college readiness.  Credit for MATH 1332 and 1342 leads to non-Algebra intensive college readiness.
