SPT 3820 SPORT AND SOCIETY

Sport shapes society in the way it is organized. Understanding the structure and organization of sport in society provides a sense for how the institution of sport is increasingly influencing society and being influenced. This course focuses on sport as a major social institution in American society. Topics include the social organization of sport, relationship of sport to other aspects of American life such as politics and education, intersections of identity and structures of sport culture.

1. Students will be able to:
   •Develop a sociological perspective of sport by learning basic sociological theories, concepts, and research methods.
2. •Demonstrate how sport influences our values, attitudes, beliefs, perceptions, behavior, culture, and society.
3. •Apply the basic principles and theories of sociology to analyze the role of sports in our everyday social lives.
4. •Connect social structures including race, class, gender, and various intersections of identity to the institution of sport.
5. •Critically examine how sports have been shaped by activism and social movements.
6. •Consider sport in cultural, political and economic context.
