SPT 3810 SPORT ANALYTICS AND TECHNOLOGY

This course focuses on the role that technology, data and analytics play in the sports industry.  While it will cover the historical impact of these forces, the bulk of the work will be on understanding the growth of analytics in the last 20 years and the increasingly influential effect that technology, “Moneyball”, and the digital age will have on the future of sport.  That study will include player performance and scouting, league and team operations (including marketing and ticketing), the evolving sport media landscape, and the changes in sport consumption.

    •Describe the historical impact of technology on the sports industry.
  2. •Appreciate the influence of technology on sports TV and digital media.
  3. •Employ academic search strategies for business and operational research.
  4. •Understand the business and technical dynamics of introducing new technologies in sport.
  5. •Assess the issues associated with utilizing various technologies, such as replay, in sport.
  6. •Gain basic knowledge of regression and predictive analytics models.
  7. •Understand the evolution of data and analytics in sport.
  8. •Recognize and analyze the impact of tracking technologies and the application of the new tracking data to performance and training activities.
  9. •Evaluate the potential influence of analytics on sport business functions like ticketing, sponsorship, venue operations, and CRM.
  10. •Demonstrate the ability to interpret and analyze source material, including published research.
