FYS 76 Southern California Immigrant and Refugee Histories
Southern California has long been a destination for people from around the world, and these new arrivals have transformed the region. They come from a wide range of continents and countries. They live, work, and raise families, changing local schools, neighborhoods, and politics. Over the past sixty years, migrants from Asia and Latin America, in particular, have contributed to the emergence of “majority-minority” cities across the Southland, igniting backlash in some. In this course, we will consider Southern California immigrant and refugee histories and communities, situating them within broader regional, national, and international contexts.
