FYS 21 Refuse, Reduce, Repair, Repurpose, Recycle: How do we do more with less to reclaim our planet?

Do you love a good thrift store, or pick up free stuff from the side of the road? This class will introduce students to the theoretical and practical challenges related to reuse systems and the circular economy.  Using Occidental College as our starting point we will start by collaborating with Touchdown Thrift, the Office of Sustainability, and other campus groups, then expanding outward to learn from the broader Los Angeles community.   Students will consider how solid waste recycling, from textiles and plastics to electronics, are changing,  which emerging technologies hold promise, and how are current policies holding us back?  This class will include several off campus field trips.

Open only to first-year frosh.
