EDUC5011 Language and Literacy Instruction for Diverse Learners
This course will explore current and emerging philosophies and methods on teaching language and literacy to culturally and/or academically diverse language learners. Students will analyze theories of first and second language acquisition (written and spoken), language literacy, the relationship of language to cognitive development, and the thinking demands on students. Knowledge of these theories is used to create and apply instruction that promotes a school environment that honors diverse perspectives, maximizes language learning potential, and ensures respect for communities whose languages or varieties of English differ from standard English.
