Program Description

The certificate programs are designed for individuals who are seeking a career in natural resources and possess a degree or are seeking job-entry level skills. This certificate program provides instruction on environmental factors that affect the start and spread of wildfire and recognition of potentially hazardous situations. Entry-level wildland firefighter skills are taught. Successful completion of this certificate can lead to a "Red Card," the Interagency Incident Qualification Card to work as a wildland firefighter.

1. S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire (FSW 100); Corequisite with FSW 101.

2. S-130 Firefighting Training (FSW 101); Corequisite with FSW 100.

3. Fire Ecology (NRE 215). Offered only in Spring.

4. One NRE Elective*. May vary depending on which elective is chosen.

*Faculty Recommend: Foundations of Forestry (NRE 100), Forestry Field Research (NRE 110), Forest Harvesting (NRE 220), S-212 Wildfire Chain Saws (FSW 143), Backcountry Travel for Natural Resource Professionals (NRE 232), Internship (NRE 280), Independent Study (NRE 285).

NRE 280 Internship or NRE 285 Independent Study - maximum of 3 credits in either course (or combination of both) may be applied to this certificate.
