OMED 7680 Medically Underserved Core Clerkship

This 6-week experience is designed to provide experiential learning in rural and medically underserved urban areas. This experience is structured to promote education, professional growth and meaningful responsibility. Students are an integral part of the healthcare team and are involved in the decision-making process of the patient care and give responsibility commensurate with their ability. Students are supervised and taught by primary care-trained attending physicians, and at some sites, students may also work with interns and residents. Although physicians in rural areas usually care for patients in outpatient settings, they often also work in emergency rooms, hospitals, specialty clinics, and urgent care centers. Learning during this rotation occurs wherever patient care takes place and is enhanced primarily through the learner-preceptor experience, and also by structured reading assignments, didactic lectures, and interactive didactics. Students will gain clinical experience in the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic medical disorders. Students are also encouraged to integrate and apply osteopathic principles and practices to the management of patients.
