MATH 6370 Mathematics Content and Pedagogy, K-5

This course covers those mathematical topics considered as essential elements for teachers of elementary school mathematics. Development of the number system beginning with the Piano Postulates, including real numbers, complex numbers, cardinal numbers and ordinal numbers. Algebraic properties of the number system will be investigated as groups, rings and fields. The use of manipulatives and a student-centered approach to learning is stressed to teach skills and concepts appropriate for grades K-5. This course may not count toward a Master of Science in Mathematics.
