Art History and Museum Studies

Introduction & Overview

Art Historians study art and architecture in their historical contexts - not only as aesthetic statements, but also as documents of culture. Art History is an interdisciplinary field that examines the cultural, religious, political, literary, technological, and economic circumstances within which works of arts are produced.  With New York City just half an hour away, students have the opportunity to see works in person on field trips, or to conduct research and hold internships at world-class museums, historical societies, galleries, libraries and auction houses in New York City, Westchester County and Connecticut. In addition to learning about artistic expression and production in a variety of time periods and genres, the Art History and Museum Studies program offers both majors and minors the opportunity to broaden horizons through in-depth study of world cultures, develop sophisticated writing and research skills through writing-intensive seminars, become confident and articulate public speakers, and work closely with experts in their respective fields. Graduating seniors will take part in a capstone experience curating an art exhibition at the Arthur M. Berger Gallery on campus. Additional opportunities include traveling with faculty members from the department to Italy during Spring Break. Many of our students have gone on to graduate school in the field, while others have pursued careers in the field.
