Academic Advising
Academic Advising
Academic Advising at North Shore Community College is an essential part of every student’s educational experience and a key contributor to academic development and overall
well-being. The department supports student persistence, engagement, and degree completion within a diverse, caring, and inclusive community. Advising at the College fosters meaningful relationships between students and faculty or staff, empowering students to take an active role in planning their education. Throughout a student’s academic journey, advisors provide consistent, personalized guidance to help clarify educational and career goals, explore academic pathways, and connect classroom learning with co-curricular interests. Advisors encourage thoughtful decision-making so students can make the most of their college experience and prepare for transfer or employment.
Quality academic advising includes both practical and developmental support. Advisors assist with course selection, program planning, maintaining degree checklists, monitoring academic progress, and completing degree evaluations. They also guide students in major and career exploration, promote campus and community involvement, and provide support and referrals for personal, academic, or financial challenges that may impact success. Each student is assigned an Academic Advisor and/or a faculty advisor within their program of study to ensure ongoing, individualized support from enrollment through graduation.
