CARP2100 Advanced Stair Framing
This advanced course builds upon foundational stair building skills to prepare students for complex residential stair construction. Students will construct advanced stair systems including a complex stair system. Emphasis is placed on interpreting architectural drawings, applying building code requirements to non-standard designs, and fabricating finish-grade components that meet precision tolerances. Students will complete a capstone project involving the layout, fabrication, and installation of a stair system with code-compliant transitions and railings.
Course Requirements and Evaluation
Refer to Course Syllabus for detailed information regarding the requirements and evaluation standards for this course. The Course Syllabus will be distributed the first week of the course.
Learning Outcomes
The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Analyze architectural plans and building codes for complex stair systems
Calculate compound stair geometry including total rise, cumulative run, headroom, and landing height
Construct a stair assembly with proper joinery, treads, risers, and newel post integration
Install rail systems and guard components that meet residential code requirements for height, spacing, and load capacity
Demonstrate precision craftsmanship through layout, cutting, and installation of advanced stair systems that integrate finish carpentry techniques and safety standards
