CARP2030 Small Business Management for Carpenters

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of planning, starting, managing, and sustaining an independent, small carpentry business. Students will learn how to develop a business plan, estimate project costs, bid jobs, manage finances, comply with licensing and insurance requirements, and build strong customer relationships. Emphasis is placed on practical skills for the self-employed carpenter or contractor, including how to start a business responsibly.

Learning Outcomes

The following outcomes will be addressed in the course:
Interpret licensing, insurance, tax, and regulatory requirements for operating a carpentry business in Minnesota
Prepare accurate estimates and bids using cost analysis methods appropriate to residential carpentry work
Apply effective scheduling, communication, and customer service strategies to sustain a positive reputation and repeat business
Evaluate strategies for scaling a business, managing employees, adopting new technologies, and maintaining profitability over time

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty-two hours for each lab credit, and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE).  Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations, or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals.  Refer to the Course Credits section of this course outline for the credit breakdown.
