HIST 105 World Civilization I

What is civilization, how does it develop, and what creates a civilization? These are the questions that historians attempt to answer as they peer into the past. Making the effort to understand societies’ past allows us to better understand our own society and also determine how we developed the economic, political, and social values that we have today. Tracing history back to the beginning and examining the development of civilization through the lenses of politics, economics, various religions, different social structures, innovation, and culture helps us improve our comprehension of the way in which society developed and, more importantly, grasp how and why we are who we are today.

In this course, you will explore world history, starting with its origins and ending with the early colonial period of the late fifteenth century. However, this course will not track history in a simple chronological format; instead, it will explore the development of civilization around the world thematically. You will examine how civilization developed worldwide through the lenses mentioned above, which will encourage you to make connections between civilizations from different places and time periods. At the end of this course, you will have an advanced and detailed understanding of not only historical events but also the critical developments that created our current society.
