The major consists of nine courses or more:  five courses at the level of 202 or higher, including Course 327, 329, or 330, and four additional courses at the 400 level, including a seminar. Two of the 400-level courses must be taken at Connecticut College.  Courses must represent at least three different “areas,” i.e., periods, themes, and/or genres.  Three courses from a semester-long study abroad program in France or a Francophone country may be counted toward the major, including up to two at the 400 level; five courses from a year-long program may be counted.  Certain First-Year Seminars offered by French Department faculty may count toward the major, depending on course subject.  No more than two courses in English may be counted. Only four courses taken at an institution other than Connecticut College may be counted.  Senior majors are expected to demonstrate proficiency in the language.  Students are encouraged to attend the French Table, and very strongly encouraged to study away in a French-speaking country.
