POLS 4360 Religion and Politics

The course introduces students to the inter-relation of religion and political systems throughout the world, with a particular focus on the United States. In the course, students will explore various religious traditions from the United States as well as from other parts of the world. Students will examine the role of religious actors, institutions, and ideologies in policymaking, state-building, democratic politics, regime change, conflict, war, and other political processes. The course will also introduce students to the role of religion in discourse about moral and social issues that have helped shape American political culture. The course will further explore the role religion has played in social identity and dynamics in the United States and throughout the world.
