Description

The dual degree program prepares students for initial teaching licensure in Massachusetts and offers a unique opportunity for aspiring teachers to develop curriculum and teaching practices that consider the needs of the diverse populations of learners they’ll encounter. This 64- to 70-credit program leads to a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and a Master of Arts (MA) in Gender and Cultural Studies.

The 64-credit program includes a full-time, 14-week practicum in an area school. The 70-credit program includes a full year student teaching internship. Students simultaneously work towards both degrees and will be endorsed for initial teaching licensure in Elementary Education (grades 1-6) upon completion of the MAT requirements.

Dual degree students complete a capstone project in GCS that may include a teaching unit. For the teaching unit, students have the option of completing a one-semester teaching practicum or a full-year teaching internship in a public school. Dual degree students present their capstone work at the GCS colloquium with their fellow graduating GCS students.

The pre-practicum and practicum provide students with a year-long teaching experience. The MAT program has developed relationships with a variety of communities in Massachusetts in order to provide our students with the best practicum experiences possible.

Please note that acceptance into the MAT program does not guarantee automatic acceptance into the pre-practicum/ practicum. Students must be recommended by the department before moving into the practical portion of the program.

Teaching Licensure

Successful completion of the MAT degree requirements, along with passing scores on the appropriate Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTELs), allows students to receive initial teaching licensure in Massachusetts at the elementary school level (grades 1-6).
