Why Study Sociology?
Sociology provides students with an understanding of the development, structure, interaction and collective behavior of organized groups of human beings. Sociologists are involved in the scientific analysis of social institutions as a functioning whole and as they relate to society.
Students interested in a degree in sociology can begin their educational goals by pursuing the Liberal Arts and Science: Humanities and Social Science degree at Rockland Community College.

Students who wish to pursue a career in sociology can continue their education by transferring to a four-year institution. Upon completion of their education students can obtain positions in education, government, public service, social research and other related areas.

Discipline Goals:
The sociology discipline will provide students with the ability to understand and analyze major social institutions, processes, and the forces of social change. Students will examine the forces of modernization and globalization upon society as well as one’s own place in that society.

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

- Demonstrate the ability to clearly, logically, and thoroughly identify and assess the essential characteristics, value, and limitations of sociological research methods
