Why Study Engineering Science?
Engineers apply the principles of science and mathematics to develop solutions to technical problems, and their work is the link between scientific discoveries and commercial applications. Starting salaries are among the highest of all college graduates, and employment outlooks are favorable due to growing demand for qualified engineers. With a combination of liberal arts and general education, plus a rigorous concentration in mathematics, physics, chemistry and basic engineering courses, RCC’s program thoroughly prepares students for transfer to four-year colleges.
Degrees Offered:
Associate of Science (AS)
Occupational Objectives:
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, overall engineering employment is expected to grow by 11 percent over the 2008–2018 decade. Engineering positions are in aerospace, agriculture, biomedical, chemical, civil, computer hardware and software, electrical, environmental, health and safety, electronics, marine/naval, mechanical, mining and geological, petroleum, nuclear, and even law or medicine. Most engineers work in office buildings, laboratories or industrial plants, but other settings include construction and oil and gas exploration sites. Numerous high-level executives in government and industry begin their careers as engineers.
5 Top Reasons
To Study Engineering Science at RCC:
- VALUE: Affordable tuition and a high-quality education. Save $30,000 to $100,000 by attending RCC before transferring to a four-year school.
- TRANSFER: The Engineering Science degree is equivalent to the freshman and sophomore course sequence for engineering programs at most four-year colleges.
- HONORS: Study among other scholars in RCC’s nationally renowned honors program or a semester abroad at Cambridge University in England.
- FACULTY: Our engineering faculty includes scientists with years of teaching and research experience in Materials, Mechanical and Bio-engineering, as well as Nanotechnology.
- FACILITIES: New state-of-the-art labs for Chemistry, Physics and Computers.
Opportunities at Rockland Community College:
Engineering students can experiment in RCC’s new, state-of-the-art Chemistry, Physics and Computer Labs and study among other scholars in the renowned and vigorous Honors Program. Students have the opportunity to gain additional skills and socialize through extracurricular activities such as the Astronomy Club, Robotics Club, Video Game & Animé Club, Chess Club, Computer Club, or develop new clubs to pursue their interests.
Program Goals:
The degree provides students with a broad education to interpret and understand their roles as professionals in industry and society. Students will demonstrate initiative, leadership, teamwork and effective communication skills.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding in the foundations of engineering: Statics, Electrical Circuits, Thermodynamics, Calculus, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Sciences
- Develop analytical and critical thinking in problem solving practices
- Demonstrate basic skills in Engineering Design and Research
- Identify, formulate and solve engineering problems
- Conduct experiments as well as analyze and interpret data
