B. Professor Emeritus/Librarian Emeritus

1. Eligibility

Emeritus status may be bestowed upon retired faculty in recognition of significant contributions to teaching, service, and scholarship at  Rochester University. They must also meet the following criteria: Retired from full-time employment as a tenured faculty member with the rank of Associate Professor/Librarian III or above; and, prior to retirement, had been employed at the university for at least 10 years. Nominations for emeritus status must be made within three years of the candidate's retirement.

 

2. Process

Faculty may submit recommendations of retired colleagues for emeriti status to the Promotion and Tenure Committee, which will confirm the eligibility of the nominee. If eligible, the Committee will notify the Faculty Senate (RUFS) of the nomination and the RUFS will vote on its recommendation of the nominee, without discussion.

Subsequent to a collective RUFS decision to recommend, individual faculty may submit either of the following to the Promotion and Tenure Committee for consideration: (a) written affirmations in support of the nomination highlighting the significant contributions to teaching, service, and scholarship at Rochester University, of (b) dissenting expressions of concern.

If approved by the Promotion and Tenure  Committee, the nomination will be forwarded to the President, who will make the final decision. 

 

3. Privileges

Upon conferral of emeriti status, a person shall have the following rights and privileges:

  • Use of the Ham Library and other university facilities.
  • Faculty discounts, where available, such as the campus store, athletic events, and performances.
  • Attendance at meetings of the faculty and service on committees in an advisory (non-voting) capacity.
  • Participation in public ceremonies, such as commencement and convocation.
  • Continued use of an RochesterU.edu e-mail address, and continued inclusion on e-mails sent to the entire faculty.
