Faculty Handbook

A. Definitions

1. Faculty

1. Faculty

Faculty who teach hold the rank of instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, or professor. Faculty members receive annual contracts.

2. Librarians

Librarians hold the rank of Librarian I, Librarian II, or Librarian III. Librarian compensation is based on rank and job descriptions, and differs from the pay scale used for teaching faculty.

2. Adjuncts

Adjuncts do not hold rank and are issued individual contracts for each course taught. Adjuncts can teach no more than 12 credit hours per semester, and no more than 18 total credit hours during a calendar year measurement period of January 1 – December 31.

When calculating hours worked for the purpose of determining benefit eligibility related to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Rochester University will credit 2.25 hours per week for every one credit hour taught. For example, if a contract is generated for a three-credit hour course, the adjunct would be credited with 6.75 total work hours per week. Adjunct faculty may not work more than 29 hours per week.

Private music lessons and independent studies do not count toward the annual total of 18 credits, however, they do count toward the weekly maximum of 29 hours.

3. Instructors

For simplicity, this handbook uses the term “instructors” to refer to both adjuncts and faculty members.
