Directed Study
Upon arrangement with the campus provost or academic dean, a student who needs a course required for current graduation at PHSC, who has not had a reasonable opportunity to enroll in that course previously, may take the course under directed study. In order to qualify for directed study, the student must be a full-time student (12 credits per semester). Additionally, it shall be up to the discretion of the provost or academic dean to determine whether the requested class is suitable for directed study. Directed study is only available after all other options have been exhausted.
Directed study is defined as a class of 11 or fewer students that is not required to meet the total number of instructional hours established for the course and where there are provisions for:
- Meeting with the instructor at least once a week for a course lasting a full session or a proportionate time for courses of shorter duration,
- Instructor option of more frequent meetings for those students needing additional attention and/or interaction,
- Standards and content, in the opinion of the instructor and the campus provost or academic dean, to be comparable to a regularly scheduled class in the subject.
Courses containing laboratory experiences in which student participation is a particularly important element, are not eligible for directed study.
