CSP 53 American Indians and the Urban Diaspora

At present, 70% of American Indians live in urban areas such as Los Angeles. This course will investigate the challenges and adaptations native communities face in the urban diaspora and investigate the role religion plays in organizing their urban experience. It will start with an introduction to Native American Studies, Postcolonial Theory, and a review of how indigenous people have been represented in American society. Special attention will be given to art, music, social justice, and issues of religious freedom. Course materials will include novels, scholarly articles, case studies, history, ethnography, and film. The course will also involve field trips to relevant destinations in the Los Angeles area.
