The Elementary Education Program prepares students for careers teaching and working with elementary school children in public school settings. Students build knowledge and applied skills through liberal arts and sciences coursework and courses relating directly to the experience of working with elementary school children. Graduates of the program will move directly into the career field as paraeducators/teacher aides or they can transfer after graduation into four-year college teacher preparation programs where they will complete the requirements for elementary education teacher licensure to teach in first through sixth grade public school settings.

Program Student Learner Outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge of the core competencies in child and school-age development.
- Communicate skills in research, professional development and family involvement in children’s education.
- Analyze the various approaches of curriculum design to address the diverse needs of children.
- Evaluate resources and services for children with or without special needs; Identify the historical and theoretical foundations of education.
- Examine and understand the issues facing schools in today’s diverse society, including socioeconomic distinctions, gender, race, ethnicity, special education and the changing standards for future educators.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the theory and research relevant to the professional role(s) and focus area(s) emphasized in the program.
- Demonstrate competency in core content knowledge in Liberal Arts & Science courses; Apply knowledge acquired in the program as a foundation for continued study.
Occupational Skills Required
- Speak clearly to students, other teachers, parents and administration officials.
- Explain new ideas and unfamiliar concepts with authority and in a clear and concise way so that students can understand.
- Keep the students' attention. Teachers write progress reports, and notes home. Writing skills are critical.
- Intercultural competency
- Understanding of leaning styles and how to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners.
- Engaging parents and creating healthy relationships with students and faculty will help create a quality learning environment.
