Dyslexia and the Science of Reading, ADV CERT (E510)
Program Overview
Note: All of the courses in this program may be applied to the M.Ed. program in Educational Studies. Neither the M.Ed. program nor this Certificate of Advanced Study program leads to New York State classroom teaching certification. Courses in the program may also apply towards the Masters of Professional Studies in Literacy or Literacy and Special Education.
The Dyslexia Certificate is designed to empower general and special education teachers with deeper understanding of the research and evidence behind the Science of Reading to help inform the assessment and instruction with their students. In addition to the theoretical background of the Science of Reading, the program will offer extensive experience in designing and implementing evidence-based literacy intervention strategies in a practicum model. The program builds upon indicators of language-based learning disabilities to guide explicit, structured, sequential literacy instruction (ESSLI to help each child reach their full potential. The certificate will equip educators with the background and skill set to notice early signs and remediate children at-risk for dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities. Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Be aware of dyslexia’s neurobiological origins and its effect on language and literacy development
- Understand the variations in the processing and development of the various elements of language and literacy
- Identify the most current theory and practice in the assessment of reading, language development, and literacy.
- Identify the key elements of multisensory, explicit, structured literacy instruction
- Directly and explicitly teach students how to write sentences and expository paragraphs
- Apply strategies to implement the reading-writing connection
- Create lesson plans that demonstrate understanding of diagnostic, prescriptive teaching using an explicit, structured literacy approach
Admissions Requirements:

_____3 Years teaching experience or enrollment in a Masters program in Education or Psychology.
