Entrance Audition
Candidates for the BFA Musical Theatre Program must pass an entrance audition to be admitted to the program. The audition, which can be live or by video on ACCEPTD, is evaluated by full-time faculty. Auditions are also used to recommend scholarship awards. Transfer students and students wishing to change their major to Musical Theatre are also required to audition.
Candidates are required to perform three songs and one monologue, all of which should be memorized. One song should be from the classical repertoire or operetta; the two musical theatre songs should be from different periods or styles. Applicants are evaluated on the following criteria: musical comprehension, technical ability, level of preparation, and overall performance.
Music Performance
Due to the nature of the discipline, Musical Theatre majors perform progressive and cumulative assessments related to musical theatre performance. Solo and ensemble performances are evaluated throughout the four years, beginning with the entrance audition, and culminating with the Senior Capstone Recital.
Concert Attendance Policy
The Fine and Performing Arts faculty consider attendance at events and concerts to be a vital part of musical theatre training and an indication of commitment to the major. Each semester students must attend as many on-campus plays, concerts, recitals, and art showings as possible.
Minimum Grade Policy
A grade of at least C- is required for coursework to count towards all Music programs, except in the Senior Capstone course, which requires a minimum grade of C.
