Texas Success Initiative
Students attending Texas public institutions of higher education must be in compliance with the Texas Success Initiative (TSI), as of Fall 2013 (Texas Education Code 51.3062) in order to enroll. The law requires all entering students to be assessed for college readiness in reading, writing and mathematics unless the student qualifies for an exemption.
Active Military Servicemember Exemption
A student who is serving on active duty as a member of the armed forces of the United States, the Texas National Guard or as a member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States and has been serving for at least three years preceding enrollment may be exempted. The service member must provide a valid statement of service from his or her unit of assignment.
Qualifying students are strongly encouraged to consider placement testing under the TSI even if they qualify for the exemption. If the exemption is applied VA Education Benefits can no longer be certified for developmental/remedial coursework. Please contact Veterans Services for more information.
Veteran Exemption
A student who on or after August 1, 1990, was honorably discharged, retired, or released from active duty as a member of the armed forces of the United States or Texas National Guard or service as a member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States by be exempted from participation in the TSI exam.
You are strongly encouraged to consider placement testing under the TSI. Even though you may qualify for the exemption and may be placed directly into college level courses in Math and English, this placement may not actually be appropriate based on your academic skills. Taking the placement test will give you a good idea of the appropriate level of coursework. This may help you be more successful in your studies.
