Master of Public Health

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Public Health Core Competencies: Develop knowledge in the five core areas listed below and demonstrate the ability to apply this knowledge in the context of public health problems. Generally, students will develop the ability to organize, evaluate and communicate public health information.

  • Community Health Education Specialization
    • Assess individual and community needs for health education.
    • Plan health education strategies, interventions and programs.
    • Implement health education strategies, interventions and programs.
    • Conduct evaluation and research related to health education.
    • Administer health education strategies, interventions and programs.
    • Serve as a health education resource person.
    • Communicate and advocate for health and health education.
  • Apply human rights and social justice principles to public health problems to support improved quality in and accessibility to health care and health education.
  • Apply public health and community health competencies through the completion of a supervised practicum experience in public health education.
  • Apply the theories and principles of public health to the completion of a capstone project in public health education.

Admissions

For general information on the admissions process, refer to the General Admissions in this catalog. Information below refers only to the public health program.

Prerequisites

Students must have a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in undergraduate coursework and an introductory statistics or biostatistics course. Students are also required to submit scores from the General GRE. Exceptional candidates who do not meet these requirements will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Qualified students will be invited to interview.

Graduation Requirements

MPH students must complete a minimum of 63 credits. This includes 43 core course credits, six (6) elective credits, five (5) practicum credits and nine (9) capstone credits. Students must complete 43 of these credits in residence at Bastyr University.  Students must earn a minimum GPA of 3.0 and must complete their degree within five years following matriculation into the program.
