CNSL 6180 Lifespan Development

Theories and current research in development across the lifespan with emphasis on applications to counseling. This course explores the various developmental stages of the human lifespan including childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and death/ dying. The characteristics of each stage are addressed through key developmental theories. Focus is on milestones as well as developmental problems.

3. Know the biological, neurological, and physiological factors that affect human development, functioning, and behavior
4. Know the systemic and environmental factors that affect human development, functioning, and behavior
5. Understand the effects of crisis, disasters, and trauma on diverse individuals across the lifespan
6. Apply a general framework for understanding differing abilities and strategies for differentiated interventions
7. Apply ethical and culturally relevant strategies for promoting resilience and optimum development and wellness across the lifespan
8. Understand the impact of biological and neurological mechanisms on mental health
9. Identify the cultural factors relevant to clinical mental health counseling
