In this course, we will examine how chemistry intersects with other areas of science and, more broadly, with society. Topics may be chosen by students according to their areas of strongest interest, from social justice-related issues pertaining to manufacturing, pollution and safety; to environmental-related issues such as how climate change has impacted chemical systems in the natural world and what solutions chemistry may offer; to health-related issues including the discovery of and access to medicines and understanding of diseases; to any number of other interdisciplinary areas of chemistry. There will be mandatory on- and/or off-campus field trips to tour modern chemical research labs in various areas of study. Open only to first-year frosh.
