CHE201 Organic Chemistry 1

This course introduces the fundamental principles of organic chemistry. Topics include: review of bonding and resonance/Brønsted-Lowry reactions as related to organic compounds (pKa), alkanes: nomenclature and conformational analysis of open-chain and cyclic alkanes, alkenes: nomenclature, reactions, mechanisms and physical properties including conjugated systems, alkynes: nomenclature, reactions, mechanisms and physical properties, stereochemistry, substitution, and elimination reactions and mechanisms, alkyl halides; nomenclature, reactions, mechanisms and physical properties, spectroscopy including infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and other topics as needed. Laboratory work reinforces lecture concepts, and is intended to give students hand-on experience that will help them understand, appreciate, and apply chemical concepts. Fulfills open, liberal arts, and with CHE202, laboratory science sequence electives. (3 hours of lecture, 3 hours of lab per week)
