ENGL 261 American Literature I
This course surveys the principle authors and literary movements from pre-colonial beginnings up to the end of the Civil War (1865). While the course’s primary objective is to develop a familiarity with and understanding of major issues and movements in this period of literary history, the course is also intended to help develop a student’s critical reading, thinking, and writing skills important both in literary studies and everyday engagement with the cultural texts that shape our world.
