CSCH.3027 The GOAT Debate

What does it mean to be the greatest of all time? In this seminar, we will explore the concept of greatness, using sport, where the term GOAT originated, as our compass. We will investigate how societies determine who is the "GOAT," why that title matters, and how it might differ from being the best. Students will engage with case studies of legendary figures such as Michael Jordan, Serena Williams, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Elvis, and Picasso, while examining the social, historical, and cultural forces that shape definitions of excellence. Through discussions, readings, and projects, we will question how media, public opinion, personal bias, and shifting cultural values influence our choices. Students should expect to debate one another, challenge their own assumptions, and rethink what it means to be truly great.
