CSCH.3026 Global Film Essays
The 21st Century is the century of documentary. From streaming Netflix series and YouTube/TikTok videos to the long-running National Film Board of Canada, to feature films premiered at Cannes and Lincoln Center, documentary and its related forms have become a signature contemporary mode of understanding and analyzing the world around us. Our work in this section of Castle Scholars will focus on two related categories: documentary studies and the film essay. Students will explore, view, analyze, discuss, and critique the long history of documentary film, photography, and literature as well as create midterm photo-texts and capstone documentary projects (in writing, photography, and/or video) about previously "unseen" aspects of everyday life and the world around us.
