Work Study Program
The Federal and State work study programs provide part-time employment for students who demonstrate financial need in order to off set the cost of higher education. Work Study employment allows students the opportunity to earn their aid and is not intended to interfere with a student's education. Student's studies are given first priority.The program encourages community service work and work related to the student’s course of study.
Students who require financial assistance may apply for the Federal, or Texas Work Study Program. The Federal Work Study Program provides on-campus and off-campus part-time employment for undergraduates students. The work study program enables students who are enrolled in at least 6 eligible hours to help pay for their college related expenses. Review the Student Financial Aid website for more details; availability of work study positions will be found on-line at the financial aid website www.laredo.edu.cms.fa. Students under work-study must meet Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress standards.
To apply for a Federal Work-Study position:
Complete the current year Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online.
Student must have unmet need.
Check to see if there is no missing information/documentation you need to submit to the Student Financial Aid & Veterans Affairs Services Center.
Check My Financial Aid Status to see if you meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress standards.
Check My Program of Study to make sure you have selected a primary program of study.
Register for at least six hours (Fall/Spring) or three hour (Summer) and pay the tuition if you don’t have any other financial aid.
Students will be required to:
Complete a work-study application
Review a listing of available work-study jobs (list available online)
Set up an interview with the work-study supervisor for the job that interests them
If student is offered a Federal work-study job, student has to fill out and provide the documents/forms listed below:

I-9 Form
W-4 Form
Social Security Card
Identification with photo
Proof of eligibility for employment
Once student has provided documents/forms, the Student Financial Aid & Veterans Affairs Services Center will proceed to send these to institution's Human Resources Office for processing.
Human Resources Office codes students who are offered work-study jobs as Laredo College Student Employees and notifies the Student Financial Aid & Veterans Affairs Services Center Coordinator when the student may commence employment.
Student Financial Aid & Veterans Affairs Services Center will provide student with all necessary documentation to finalize hiring/employment process. Once all forms have been submitted to the Student Financial Aid & Veterans Affairs Services Center and you have been approved to commence employment as a Federal work-study, you will be provided with the date on which you may report to work.
Here’s a quick overview of Federal Work Study:
The Federal Work Study program:
- provides part-time employment while students are enrolled in school
- is available to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students with financial need
- is available to full-time or part-time students
- is administered by schools participating in the Federal Work-Study Program
A work study student will earn at least the current federal minimum wage. However, you may earn more depending on the type of work you do and the skills required for the position. Total work-study award depends on:
- The time when you apply;
- A student's level of financial need; and
- The institutions' funding level.
Can I work as many hours as I want?
No, federal regulations are followed in regards to number of hours a student can work; normally, students work 12 hours a week. When assigning work schedules, supervisors consider the student's class schedule. Before a student is hired, the student financial aid center reviews the students' academic progress for eligibility.
